Welland wins Dominico Cup

WELLAND – Welland is back on top. 

The Jackfish captured its second Dominico Cup in three years with a 15-5 win over Barrie on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,248 fans at Welland StadiumWelland took the best-of-seven series in five games. 

Brendan Luther went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Jackfish, which finished first in the regular seasonJonah Weisner went 3-for-6 with an RBI and three runs. He also picked up two of Welland’s six stolen bases and finished with a league-leading 11 playoff swipes.  

Gianfranco Morello went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs, Jake Sanford singled, doubled and drove in a run, Greyson Barrett hit a two-run single in the fifth inning as Welland put up seven runs in the frame to pull aheadBrandon Hupe had three RBI, Matteo Porcellato went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, and playoff MVP Robert Mullen drove in a run. Mullen slashed .356/.483/.533/1.016 in 13 playoff games. One of his two postseason home runs was a walk-off blast in Game 1 against Barrie, and he finished the playoffs with nine RBI.  

On the mound, Ben Abram (2-0) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits in 6.2 innings. He fanned four and walked one. 

For Barrie, which entered playoffs as the second seed, Noel McGarry Doyle went 2-for-4 with a solo home run. Nolan Machibroda singled, doubled and drove in a run, Adam Odd went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Noah Hull doubled and scored twice.  

Hayden Jaco (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits with a strikeout in 4.1 innings.
