Welland walks off Baycats in Game 1
WELLAND – Robert Mullen’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth scored Jonah Weisner to give Welland a 6-5 win on Sunday over Barrie in Game 1 of the best-of-seven Dominico Cup final.
Weisner went 3-for-4 with an RBI but walked to start the inning. He stole second and advanced to third on a bunt before Mullen called game. Brandon Hupe hit a hit a two-run single, and Jake Sanford added a two-run blast. Greyson Barrett and Thomas Green each had two hits and scored a run.
On the mound, Pedro De Los Santos (1-0) struck out four over three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Ben Abram started and went four innings. He allowed four runs on 10 hits with a strikeout.
Adam Odd led Barrie with two solo home runs. Noel McGarry Doyle had a solo home run and RBI double, and Francisco Hernandez went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Carlos Sano (1-2) took the loss after giving up a run on one hit and two walks. He took over for Frank Garces, who allowed five runs on 10 hits over eight innings. He walked three and struck out six.
Game 2 is Tuesday in Barrie.
