Welland's Clingersmith wins pitcher's duel

BRANTFORD – Welland's Matthew Clingersmith outdueled Brantford's Brady Cappe, and the Jackfish finally broke through with a run in the ninth inning of a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox Sunday at Arnold Anderson Stadium.

Clingersmith (2-0) tossed eight scoreless innings, scattering four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Casey Bouillere-Howard recorded the last three outs for his second save.

Wilson Soriano scored the lone run on an error by Brantford catcher Fernando Suarez. Nolan Pettipiece had two of Welland's six hits and stole a base.

Luis Perez had two of Brantford's five hits.

Cappe went six innings, yielding five hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts. Victor Mueses (0-2) took the loss, allowing an unearned run over three innings. He gave up just one hit, walked four and struck out seven.

Welland moved to 4-3, and Brantford dropped to 1-6.
