Royals move closer to first after win

GUELPH – The Guelph Royals inched closer to first place in the IBL with a 4-2 win over Barrie Tuesday night at David E. Hastings Stadium.


Guelph (23-11) trails both London and Welland by 1.5 games.


Dalton Pompey, Kyle DeGrace and Malik Collymore all drove in a run for the Royals. Brendan Keys went 3-for-4 with a run, Conner Morro had two hits and a run and Josh Garton picked up a pair of hits.


Evan Chenier (2-0) earned the win, allowing one run on three hits with a strikeout in relief of Jeifry Nunez, who went the first four innings and gave up a run on two hits with a walk and five strikeouts.


Andrew Case struck out one in a scoreless ninth for his second save.


Frank Garces (1-2) went seven innings in the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.


Malik Williams and Carson Burns each hit solo home runs for the fifth-place Baycats (20-15).
