Royals blank Leafs

GUELPH – Four Guelph pitchers combined for a two-hit shutout as the Royals blanked Toronto 4-0 Saturday afternoon at David E. Hastings Stadium.

Jacob Kush threw the first four innings and didn’t allow a hit. He walked five and struck out eight. Rhys Montgomery (1-0) went two innings to earn the win. He gave up a hit and struck out one. After Darren Shred walked one and struck out one in the seventh inning, Brandon Deans picked up the save by striking out five over two innings.

At the plate, Josh Garton went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a stolen base. Blake Simpson singled twice and drove in a run, and Marc Nellis had a pair of hits and a steal.

For Toronto (0-3), Charlie Towers doubled and Ryan Dos Santos singled. Wilgenis Alvarado (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits over 4.2 innings. He walked two and fanned three.
