Morello comes up with winning hit as Red Sox top Leafs
BRANTFORD -- Gianfranco Morello's one-out single in the bottom of the ninth scored Zach Lampreia to give the Brantford Red Sox a 5-4 win over Toronto Friday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
Lampreia opened the bottom half of the inning with a single and then stole second. He advanced to third on a wild pitch one out later and scored the winning run when Morello connected on Michael Asta's 2-2 pitch. Morello finished with two hits and three RBI as the Red Sox improved to 5-12. Jesse Fishbaum and Robbie Gauthier drove in Brantford's other runs.
Red Sox reliever Jason Pineda (1-0) threw a perfect ninth for the win. Jacob English started for Brantford, giving up a run on two hits with six walks and three strikeouts.
Asta (0-2) took the loss after yielding three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. He struck out five and didn't issue a walk. Toronto starter Marek Deska went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
At the plate, Garret Takamatsu drove in two and walked twice as the Leafs left 14 runners on base. Johnathan Solazzo and Ryan Santos had two hits apiece, and Jordan Castaldo and Justin Marra each drove in a run.
Toronto fell to 7-8.
