Red Sox put on fireworks display against Barnstormers

CHATHAM — The Brantford Red Sox put on a Canada Day offensive fireworks display at Fergie Jenkins Field, dismantling the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers 25-3 in Intercounty Baseball League action.
The Red Sox exploded for 21 hits, including five home runs, as they broke the game open early with a five-run first inning and never looked back.
Christian Ortega led the charge with a monster night at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a home run and five RBI. Cassidy Watt matched Ortega’s production with three hits and five RBI of his own, including a  homer in the fourth inning.
Outfielder Rene Tachioka continued his hot hitting, finishing 4-for-6 with a home run, three RBI, and a stolen base. Brody Black came off the bench to add a homer and four RBI, while Jeremie Veilleux chipped in with a two-run blast.
On the mound, Leandro Mejia earned the win for Brantford.
Chatham-Kent starter Torrin Vaselenak took the loss, surrendering seven earned runs over two innings.
Owen Constantineau provided one of the few bright spots for the Barnstormers, hitting his first home run of the season and driving in a pair of runs.
The win improves the Red Sox to 5-16 on the season, snapping a two-game skid, while Chatham-Kent drops to 13-8.
The Red Sox hit the road July 3, when they take on the Welland Jackfish at 7:15pm. The Barnstormers will lick their wounds and take on the Kitchener Panthers July 3 at 7:30pm.
