Moretto leads Welland longball barrage

TORONTO – Steven Moretto clubbed two of five Welland home runs in a 7-4 win Sunday in Toronto.

Both longballs for the Jackfish’s first baseman were solo blasts. Matteo Porcellato went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, Brandon Hupe singled, doubled, homered and drove in three, while Robert Mullen added a solo shot. Tyson Gomm singled twice and scored.

Brandon Underhill (2-1) tossed three scoreless innings for the win. He scattered four hits and struck out one. Deivy Mendez fanned three of the six batters he faced for his second save. Brandon Marklund started and walked two and struck out two in his only inning.

Angel Castro (0-1) took the loss for the Leafs, yielding seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

Justin Marra and Marcus Knecht each had two hits and an RBI. Ryan Dos Santos and Chris Robinson both drove in a run and Jose Vinicio singled twice.

Welland improved to 8-3, and Toronto dropped to 4-8.
