Mercado’s effort lifts Royals

GUELPH – Nelson Mercado came on in relief to start the second inning and went the rest of the way, giving up a run on five hits to lead the Guelph Royals to a 6-1 home win over Barrie Tuesday night.

Mercado (1-3) walked two and struck out six over his eight innings of work. Starter Darren Shred struck out one and gave up a hit in the first inning.

At the plate, Noah Roberts went 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Justin Interisano had two hits, two RBI and scored, Ethan Hammond drove in a run and Malik Collymore scored twice.

For Barrie, Ryan Rijo had two hits and an RBI. Noel McGarry-Doyle scored the lone run.

Evan Soules (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 5.2 innings. He walked three and struck out one.

Guelph improved to 7-7, and Barrie dropped to 9-7.
