Majors strike late in Brantford

BRANTFORD – Charlie Bowman’s two-out single in the top of the ninth was the difference in London’s season-opening 6-5 win Sunday afternoon in Brantford.
Bowman, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the sixth, drove in Kaiden Cardoso after the Majors’ first baseman tripled for his third hit of the game. Cardoso tripled and doubled in previous at bats and also drove in a run.
London leadoff hitter Toby Simmons went 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs and a steal. Francisco Fajardo and Eduardo De Oleo drove in a run apiece.
Victor Payano (1-0) picked up the win after three scoreless innings of relief. He scattered three hits, walked one and struck out four. Majors’ starting pitcher Travis Keys allowed three unearned runs on three hits over three innings. He walked three and struck out two.
Jeremie Veilleux paced the Red Sox offence with four singles and an RBI. Lucas Bateman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and Tim Holyk added an RBI.
Aidan Armitage (0-1) took the loss after giving up a run on three hits in 1.2 innings. He walked one and struck out two. Brantford’s Jeremias Sucre started on the mound and went three innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts. He didn’t issue a walk.
