Majors score late to beat Jackfish

WELLAND – After blowing a six-run lead, the London Majors scored twice in the eighth inning and three times in the ninth to defeat the Welland Jackfish 12-9 Saturday afternoon.

London led 7-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, but Welland stormed back with eight straight runs to take a 9-7 lead heading into the eighth. The fifth-place Majors (16-17) mounted a comeback of their own in the late innings to seal their second consecutive victory.

Cleveland Brownlee went 3-for-4 with two solo home runs, Mike Ambrose hit a three-run blast in the ninth, and Ismael Pena added a solo shot. Pena (2-3) also picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He scattered three hits while walking one and striking out three.

Steve Froese drove in two, Kyle Gormandy had two hits and an RBI, Byron Reichstein went 3-for-5 with three runs, Yuki Yasuda had two hits and scored twice, and Carlos Arteaga singled twice and scored.

Owen Boon started and went 5.2 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

For Welland (16-15), Vaughn Bryan went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs. Nolan Pettipiece drove in three and scored once, Wilson Soriano had three hits, three stolen bases and two runs, Mattingly Romanin went 2-for-2, and Connor Feuerstake singled twice and added two steals while driving in a run and scoring once.

Ryan Bench (1-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits and three walks in 1.2 innings.

Starter Christian Young gave up seven runs (six earned) on 13 hits in six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
