Majors move into first-place tie with Welland

LONDON – Austin Wilkie’s grand slam in the bottom of the sixth was the difference as London moved into a tie with Welland for first place thanks to a 7-5 win over the Jackfish Sunday night at Labatt Park.


Both teams are 26-10.


After Welland scored twice in the top of the sixth to pull even, Taylor Wright’s fielder’s choice scored Jakob Newton to give London its second lead of the game. Wilkie followed three batters later with a home run on a full count that put the Majors ahead 7-2.


Owen Boon struck out eight over seven innings to earn the win. He gave up two unearned runs on nine hits with three walks.

Matt Hilderbrandt went 3-for-4 for Welland with a two-run blast in the eighth. Tyler Dupuis and Justin Gideon each had two hits, while Brandon Nicholson went 3-for-4. Ethan Hunt had two hits and scored twice.


Brett Lawson (0-2) took the loss, allowing two unearned runs without recording an out. Rich Corrente started and went five innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and strikeout.
