Leyer shuts down Cardinals

HAMILTON – Welland starting pitcher Euclides Leyer fanned nine over seven shutout innings as the Jackfish blanked Hamilton 4-0 on Sunday at the Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.  

Leyer (5-1) scattered six hits and walked two. He gave way to Deivy Mendes, who picked up his fourth save with two innings of relief. Mendes struck out two.  

At the plate, Matteo Porcellato and Robert Mullen had two hits apiece, Greyson Barrett singled twice and drove in a run, Jonah Weisner had an RBI, and Brandon Hupe had an RBI and three steals.  

Welland improved to 24-10.  

Johnathan Solazzo went 3-for-3 for the Cards (17-15), and Tyler Duncan singled and tripled. 

Freisis Adams (2-4) gave up an unearned run in the loss. He pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two. Corben Peters scattered four hits over four scoreless innings. He walked one and fanned four.
