Leafs win slugfest

TORONTO – Jordan Castaldo hit his league-leading 12th home run and drove in eight runs in Toronto’s 14-13 win over Brantford on Saturday at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.  

Castaldo finished with four hits and was a triple short of the cycle. He’s now third in the IBL with 38 RBI. Dennis Dei Baning went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, Mike Cecchetto drove in three, Benjamin Sitarenios had two hits, while Ryan Dos Santos and Jhon Javier each scored three runs atop the Leafs’ lineup.  

Wilgenis Alvarado (4-2) earned the win in relief. He allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits with five punchouts. Ayami Sato started and went 2.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits. Matt Brown struck out two of three hitters he faced for his first save. 

Toronto (18-24) will enter playoffs as the seventh seed.

Jakob Cantor went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI for the Red Sox (11-30). Brody Black and Andrew Savage each hit solo home runs, Rene Tachioka had two hits and three RBI, Graham Tebbit drove in a run, while Jeremie Veilleux, Lucas Bateman, Cassidy Watt and Lucas Lefebvre all scored twice. 

Tyler Soucie (0-1) took the loss on the mound after allowing three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Noah Law started and was pulled with two outs in the second inning. He gave up six runs on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
