Leafs’ hurlers shut down Cards

HAMILTON – Three Toronto pitchers combined to shut down the Hamilton Cardinals in a 5-1 win Friday night at Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.

Maple Leafs’ starter Marek Deska lasted five innings and gave up a run on one hit. He walked two and struck out four. Zach Sloan and Chris Nagorski combined to give up one hit and strike out two over the final four innings.

Damon Topolie led the offence with a two-run blast. Jordan Castaldo and Johnathan Solazzo also had an RBI. Jose Vinicio went 2-for-5 with two runs and Yusei Teruoka had two hits and scored once.  

Cardinals’ starter Chris Lazar was pulled with one out in the seventh, allowing five runs on nine hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Tyler Duncan had both Hamilton hits and drove in the lone run in the bottom of the first.

Toronto improved to 10-6, and Hamilton dropped to 4-10.
