Late runs send Cards past Red Sox

BRANTFORD – Justin Gideon’s one-out single in the top of the eighth scored Tristan Osika to break a 5-5 tie and send the Hamilton Cardinals to an 8-5 win over Brantford Friday afternoon at Arnold Anderson Stadium.

Anthony Buonaiuto drove in three, Sean Pettener had a pair of RBI and Laine Renaud went 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs.

Stefan Strecker (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless, hitless inning of relief. Daury Torrez struck out one for his second save. Owen MacNeil started and allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Hamilton improved to 6-16.

Nick Burdett homered and drove in three for the Red Sox, who fell to 0-16. Liam Sutherland added a solo shot. Jesse Fishbaum had two hits and two runs, Jon Dziomba went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Troy Banks singled twice.

Danny Howat (0-1) took the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits on four hits with two strikeouts over two innings. Red Sox starter Bennett Moore lasted 4.1 innings and allowed five runs on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
