Jackfish takes Dominico Cup lead
WELLAND – It was another one-run game, and this time Welland came out on top.
Brendan Luther’s one-out single in the bottom of the eighth scored Robert Mullen for the go-ahead run in the Jackfish’s 3-2 victory on Thursday night.
Welland leads the best-of-seven Dominico Cup final 2-1, with Game 4 on Saturday in Barrie. The first three games have been decided by the slimmest margin.
Luther finished with two hits, while Brandon Hupe went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Gianfranco Morello tripled and scored.
On the mound, Teodoro Ortega (4-0) pitched eight innings for the win and allowed two runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out eight. Pedro De Los Santos gave up a leadoff hit but retired the next three Barrie batters for his first playoff save of 2025.
Clayton Keyes drilled a solo homer for the Baycats, who only had three hits. Francisco Hernandez drove in a run the hard way when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Ramon Henrique (0-1) took the loss in relief after allowing a run on three hits and a strikeout in the eighth inning. Juan Benitez started and went seven innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked three.
