Jackfish strikes late in win

WELLAND – Welland scored six runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 13-8 home win over Guelph on Thursday night. 

The Jackfish picked up six hits in the inning and took advantage of three wild pitches.  Gianfranco Morello had a two-run single, Pier-Olivier Boucher singled home a run, Robert Mullen had an RBI groundout, and Matteo Porcellato completed the scoring in the eighth with an RBI single on his third hit of the night. 

Greyson Barrett drilled a three-run home run in the bottom of the first. Austin Gomm drove in two, Jonah Weisner and Brandon Hupe both had an RBI, and Brendan Luther singled twice.  

Euclides Leyer (4-0) struck out seven in 2.2 innings of relief to earn the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on two hits. Jose Dominguez started for Welland (18-6) and gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings. He walked two and struck out two. 

For Guelph (11-15), Garrett Takamatsu homered twice and drove in four. Blake Simpson and Ethan Hammond drove in a run apiece, and J.D. Williams went 2-for-5 with two runs and a stolen base. 

Adyn Schell (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in three innings of relief. He walked five and fanned seven. Sebastian Rodriguez started and was charged with five runs on six hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three.
