Jackfish storm back to stun Majors in ninth

WELLAND – Matt Hilderbrandt’s two-run single capped a six-run ninth as the Welland Jackfish stormed back to stun London Saturday afternoon.

Welland trailed 7-2 with three outs remaining but needed just two hits in the final inning, capitalizing on a pair of Majors’ errors and three walks to pull off the 8-7 win.

Hilderbrandt and Brandon Nicholson each had a pair of hits and two RBI. Nicholson also scored twice. Tyler Dupuis had two hits and two runs, Gianfranco Morello went 2-for-5 and Sam Cawker drove in a run.

Wyatt Hummel earned the win with a scoreless ninth, striking out one. Rob Nixon (1-0) started and allowed three runs on five hits over 4.1 innings. He struck out five and didn’t issue a walk.

Robert Mullen drove in a pair for the Majors.

Daniel Perrier, Andrew Lawrence and Keith Kandel all had an RBI. Chris McQueen and Cleveland Brownlee each had a pair of hits.

Jarryd Lund (0-1) took the loss. He was charged with an unearned run after the first of two batters he faced reached on an error. Starter Jose Arias yielded a run on five hits over six innings, walking one and striking out seven.
