Jackfish stay undefeated in win over Leafs

TORONTO – The IBL’s only undefeated team held on for its fifth straight win to open the season.

Welland improved to 5-0 with an 8-6 win over Toronto Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits.

Ethan Hunt went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for Welland. Brandon Nicholson drove in two on three hits and also scored twice, while Sam Cawker went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs. Mateo Porcellato had a pair of RBI and Mike Wagner singled twice and scored.

Rich Corrente (1-0) went six innings for the win, giving up three runs on six hits. He walked one and struck out two. Scott Gillespie earned the three-inning save, yielding three runs on three hits with three walks and four Ks.

Brady Cerkownyk hit a two-run blast and Greg Carrington added a solo shot for the Leafs (2-4). Johnathan Solazzo drove in two, Justin Marra had an RBI and scored, Jordan Castaldo singled twice and scored, and Garrett Takamatsu singled, doubled and scored twice.

Mason Fenwick (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over four innings. He walked two and struck out one.
