Jackfish Sink Red Sox with Early Offensive Surge
WELLAND — The Welland Jackfish flexed their offensive muscle early and never looked back, topping the Brantford Red Sox 9-3 in Intercounty Baseball League action Thursday night at Welland Stadium.
A crowd of 1,665 filled the ballpark on a warm, clear evening as José Domínguez delivered another solid start for the Jackfish, tossing six innings of three-run ball while striking out six to earn the win.
After two quiet innings, the Jackfish bats erupted in the third. After Jonah Weisner scored on a wild pitch, Matteo Porcellato hit a two-run single, while Brendan Luther also had a single, knocking in one.
The Jackfish kept rolling in the fourth with three more runs, followed by two more in the fifth.
Domínguez got plenty of support from his defense and bullpen. Halen Knoll, Euclides Leyer, and Deivy Mendez combined for three scoreless frames, striking out seven and allowing just three hits the rest of the way.
The Red Sox showed some fight, cutting into the lead in the fourth when Christian Ortega stroked a one-run single.
Ethan Paulos, Ortega, Jeremie Veilleux and Lucas Bateman each had two hits for the Red Sox, who managed 10 hits but stranded seven runners.
Nicholai Arbach took the loss, surrendering four runs over three innings with seven strikeouts.
With the victory, the Jackfish improve to 15-6 on the season. Saturday they host the chatham-Kent Barnstormer at 6:05pm.
The Red Sox slip to 5-17. Friday they are back in action, on the road, against the Hamilton Cardinals at 7:35pm.
