WELLAND – A 10-run eighth inning turned a nailbiter into a 13-1 Welland win over Brantford on Thursday night.
Welland had five hits in the decisive inning, none bigger than Brandon Hupe’s bases-clearing triple. He also added an RBI single to cap the scoring as Welland sent 15 batters to the plate.
The offensive outburst helped Jackfish starting pitcher Ben Abram (2-0), who locked up the win after allowing a run on five hits with five strikeouts over eight innings.
Robert Mullen went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Jonah Weisner, Joshua Marchese, Jake Sanford and Tyson Gomm all drove in a run.
Welland improved to 4-0.
Max Schmarder hads two hits and drove in the lone run for Brantford (1-4). Lucas Bateman went 2-for-3 and scored.
Jeremias Sucre (0-1) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out one.
