Jackfish hangs on to beat Baycats

WELLAND – Steven Moretto and Tyler Dupuis both homered and drove in two as Welland hung on for a 6-4 home-opening win over Barrie on Saturday night.

Jackfish centre-fielder Gianfranco Morello went 3-for-3 with a solo homer, Dawson Tweet had an RBI, while Robert Mullen and Matteo Porcellato each had a pair of singles. Porcellato also had two of Welland’s five stolen bases.

Jackfish starting pitcher Ben Abram (1-0) stuck out seven over 5.2 innings for the win. He gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with two walks. Deivy Mendez recorded the last four outs for the save.

Carlos Sano (0-1) was charged with the loss for Barrie. He was touched for four runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

Hayden Jaco led the Baycats’ offence with three hits, an RBI and a run. Canice Ejoh and Malik Williams had two hits and an RBI apiece, Adam Odd drove in a run and Nolan Machibroda had two hits.
