Jackfish extends first-place lead
BARRIE – Welland moved four games ahead of Barrie atop the IBL standings after a 3-2 win over the Baycats on Thursday night at Athletic Kulture Stadium.
Gianfranco Morello went 3-for-5 for Welland (25-10). Brendan Luther and Matteo Porcellato each drove in a run, and Jonah Weisner singled and accounted for three of Welland’s seven steals.
Baycats’ starting pitcher Teodoro Ortega (6-1) fanned 12 over seven innings. He was charged with a run on four hits and a walk. Deivy Mendez worked around a walk and hit in the ninth to lock up his fifth save.
Nolan Machibroda and Francisco Hernandez each had an RBI for the Baycats (21-14).
Frank Garces took the loss despite striking out 12 over seven innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks.
