Jackfish comes back in Guelph

GUELPH – Welland erased a four-run deficit with an eight-run fifth inning on Tuesday night in Guelph.  

The Jackfish sent 13 batters to the plate in the 10-4 win. Brendan Luther and Matteo Porcellato each hit two-run singles, and Brandon Hupe plated a pair with a one-out double and finished with three RBI. Jake Sanford and Gianfranco Morello each scored on a passed ball 

Welland added two runs in the sixth to improve to 9-1.  

Jackfish starting pitcher Euclides Leyer went six innings for the win, allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and five punchouts.  

Royals’ hurler Nelson Mercado took the loss in relief after giving up four runs on three hits in the fifth inning. He took over for Jordan Taylor, who was touched up for four runs (three earned) on two hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out three.  

Garrett Takamatsu and Brando Leroux each had two hits and an RBI for Guelph (4-7), which dropped its fifth straight. Ethan Hammond and Marc Nellis had an RBI apiece.
