Jackfish clinches pennant

WELLAND – Welland clinched the IBL pennant with a 10-0 home win over Brantford on Thursday night.  

James Smibert had four of the Jackfish’s 14 hits. Three of them were doubles, and he drove in two and scored three times. Thomas Green homered and drove in three, Jonah Weisner went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Austin Gomm singled twice and drove in a run, and Matteo Porcellato, Robert Mullen and Brendan Luther all had an RBI.  

Teodoro Ortega (7-1) struck out eight over six scoreless innings to earn the win.  

Welland (28-10) has won five straight and will face the eighth seed in the first round of playoffs later this month.  

Brody Black tripled, and Rene Tachioka doubled for the Red Sox (8-28).  

Brantford starting pitcher Jose Rodriguez (0-1) was charged with two runs on one hit and four walks in an inning of work.
