Jackfish bounces back in Toronto
TORONTO – Welland rebounded from its first loss of the season with a 12-6 win Sunday in Toronto.
Welland centre-fielder Gianfranco Morello had four hits, including one of six Jackfish home runs, and three RBI. Jonah Weisner led off the game with a home run, Jake Sanford doubled twice, homered and drove in two, Brandon Hupe hit a two-run blast, Matteo Porcellato went 3-for-6 with a home run and two RBI, and Robert Mullen added a solo home run.
Welland starting pitcher Jose Dominguez (2-0) benefited from the offensive outburst, picking up the win after allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits over 5.1 innings. He walked four and fanned five. Scott Gillespie recorded the last 11 outs for the save. He gave up a run on two hits and struck out three.
Welland improved to 8-1.
For Toronto (5-5), Marcus Knecht went 2-for-5 and hit his fifth home run while driving in two. Rando Moreno and Justin Marra drove in the other runs, and Jhon Javier had three hits.
Leafs’ starting pitcher Drew Howard (0-1) was charged with four runs on five hits in four innings to take the loss. He walked three and fanned five.
