Jackfish beat Royals in pitchers' duel

GUELPH – Welland's duo of Euclides Leyer and Christian Young outdueled Guelph's Brett Lawson in the Jackfish's 3-1 win over the Royals Saturday night at David E. Hastings Stadium.

Leyer (5-1) started and threw five scoreless innings, scattering two hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Young finished the game and allowed a run on three hits with seven strikeouts in four innings.

Lawson (4-3) was the hard-luck loser, needing just 88 pitches to go the distance. Two of the three runs he allowed were earned, and he yielded six hits while striking out five.

Bryce O'Farrell hit a solo home run for Welland (14-10). Andrew Mercier had the Jackfish's other RBI, and Brendon Dadson went 2-for-4 with a run.

For Guelph, Justin Interisano drilled a solo home run in the seventh inning to cut Welland's lead in half. Brendan Fitzgerald doubled.

The Royals fell to 14-13.
