Jackfish advances past Panthers
KITCHENER – The defending champs are moving on.
Welland advanced to the second round of playoffs with an 11-5 win Tuesday in Kitchener. The Jackfish, after dropping the first game of the series, won the next three and will face Guelph in the semifinal.
Dawson Tweet went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in the win. Jake Sanford had four hits and drove in four, three of which scored on a bases-clearing double in the second inning.
Matteo Porcellato, Tyler Dupuis and Steven Moretto all drove in a run. Greyson Barrett singled twice and Jonah Weisner went 3-for-6 atop the lineup.
Brandon Underhill (1-0) went 5.2 innings for the win. He allowed five runs on 10 hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
For Kitchener, which entered the playoffs as the eighth and final seed, Raul Gonzalez and Jorden Carthy each had three hits and a solo home run. AJ Karosas added a three-run blast in the fifth. Nolan Misa and Yunior Ibarra had two hits apiece.
Yadian Martinez (0-1), who held Welland in check in the opener, was tagged for eight runs (four earned) on nine hits over 4.2 innings. He walked two and fanned five.
