IBL Weekly Awards: Cardoso and De Los Santos Shine in Season’s First Honors

The Intercounty Baseball League officially kicked off its 107th season this past week, with eight of nine teams celebrating their home openers. With the first full week in the books, it’s time to announce the inaugural HRD Bat Co. Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards for the week ending May 18, 2025.


Player of the Week – Kaiden Cardoso, London Majors

The reigning 2024 Rookie of the Year wasted no time making his presence felt in 2025. London’s Kaiden Cardoso, an Abbotsford, BC native, opened the season on fire, going 7-for-15 (.467 AVG) across the Majors' first three games — and not one of those hits was a single. Cardoso’s powerful start included two doubles, three triples, and a pair of home runs, leading the league with 8 RBI to kick off the campaign.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Toby Simmons (London): 7-for-12 (.583 AVG), 1 HR, 6 RBI

  • Jordan Castaldo (Toronto): 5-for-10 (.500 AVG), 1 HR, 3 RBI — his 99th career home run and 487th RBI, moving him into 4th all-time in IBL history.

Pitcher of the Week – Pedro De Los Santos, Brantford Red Sox

Veteran lefty Pedro De Los Santos turned in a dominant week for Brantford, earning Pitcher of the Week honors. The Santo Domingo native posted a 1-0 record with a sparkling 0.75 ERA, allowing just one earned run over 12 innings pitched. He scattered 5 hits, walked 4, and struck out 13 as the Red Sox picked up their first win of the season.

  • Euclides Leyer (Welland): 1-0, 0.00 ERA – 6 shutout innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts

  • Frank Garces (Barrie): 0-0, 0.00 ERA – 5 scoreless innings in relief vs. Toronto, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 11
