Hernandez walks off Jackfish

BARRIE – Francisco Hernandez homered on the first pitch he saw from Deivy Mendez in the bottom of the 10th, and the Barrie Baycats beat Welland 5-4 in Game 2 of the Dominico Cup final.  

The best-of-seven series is tied 1-1, with Game 3 Thursday in Welland.  

Hernandez also singled and scored three times, while Noel McGarry Doyle went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the third inning. Nolan Machibroda had two hits and an RBI, and Tristan Clarke drove in two.  

Carlos Sano (2-2) struck out three of four batters he faced in relief to earn the win. Barrie starting pitcher Cesar Rosado went six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. He walked five and fanned seven.  

Jonah Weisner drilled a solo home run to start the game for the Jackfish. James Smibert doubled and drove in two, and Brendan Luther drove added an RBI.  

Mendez (1-1) took the loss on one pitch. Jose Dominguez started and struck out four over 6.1 innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk.
