Gideon & Frias Named IBL Players of the Week

CAMBRIDGE – The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) announced its Players of the Week for the week of July 1-7.

Hamilton Cardinals' outfielder Justin Gideon was named Hitter of the Week after batting .419 (8-for-19) with four walks over a five-game stretch. Gideon, who turned 24 last month, drove in a run and scored three times. He also swiped four bases.

For the season, Gideon is slashing .394/.463/.596/1.059 with two home runs, 14 RBI and 19 runs over 94 at bats. His 10 steals are tied for fourth in the IBL. 

Brantford's Edison Frias was named Pitcher of the Week. Frias struck out eight over seven innings to help the Red Sox end a 20-game losing streak with an 11-1 win over Toronto July 7. 

The Brantford righty scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run against the Maple Leafs. In six starts, Frias has a 2.76 earned-run average and 1.15 WHIP with a 5:1 K/BB ratio in 39 innings.

The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) is the top level baseball league in Ontario, boasting ex-major league professional and elite NCAA college baseball players. The 2019 season will mark the IBL’s 101st in operation. The IBL is the fifth longest continually operated baseball league in the world and serves as a valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff. More than 40 IBL players have advanced to Major League Baseball or returned to the IBL following their MLB careers.
