Error filled afternoon costs Jackfish win in Home Opener

Welland, Ontario - The Welland Jackfish came home to a crowd of 710 on Saturday afternoon at the Pond after winning 7-2 on the road in Brantford on Friday.

A second consecutive win though was not meant to be as the Majors took advantage of the Jackfish's errors and mistakes in the infield.  Welland’s starting pitcher Christian Young was dominant through the first three innings of the ball game and gave the Jackfish every chance to win.

The fourth inning is when the wheels fell off for the Fish as London’s Byron Reichstein hit a solo shot over the centerfield wall to even the score at one after four innings. The Majors found their bats in the fifth inning as they jumped out to a commanding six-to-one lead.

Jackfish’s shortstop Robert Mackie thought he had taken away a big hit from Keith Kandel after making a diving one bounce grab but the throw across the diamond to Hildebrandt bounced just under his glove to allow the runner to advance to second. The very next play Chris Mcqueen hit a line drive down the first baseline that took an unlucky bounce over the glove of Hildebrandt. Cleveland Brownlee for the Majors would add a deep two-run home run to left field as well in the inning. London would go on to add ten more runs to spoil the home opener for the Jackfish by leaving 16-3 win.

The Jackfish will look to bounce back quickly as they play the finale of the three games in three day weekend tomorrow on the road in the province’s capital.  First pitch set for 2:00 pm in Toronto at Dominico Field at Christie Pits.
