Defending champion Baycats earn first win

BARRIE – Nolan Machibroda homered and drove in four to lead Barrie to its first win of the season on Thursday night.  

The Baycats’ first baseman drilled a three-run blast in the fifth inning of a 13-3 victory over Chatham-Kent and added an RBI groundout in the seventh. Malik Williams went 2-for-5 with three RBI for the defending champions, who are now 1-3.  

Noel McGarry-Doyle had two hits, two runs and an RBI, Noah Hull drove in two on a pair of singles and scored twice, and Francisco Hernandez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs.  

Cesar Rosado (1-0) went five innings to earn the win on the mound. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three. Brad Grieveson recorded the rare four-inning save, giving up a run on four hits. He fanned four and didn’t issue a walk.  

Spencer Marcus and Evan Morrison had two hits and an RBI apiece for Chatham-Kent (2-3). Spencer Morin drove in the other run.  

On the mound, Brock Whitson went five innings and yielded nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in five innings. He struck out one.
