Cards move over .500 after win
WELLAND – Hamilton moved a game over .500 after a 3-2 win Thursday in Welland.
All of the game’s runs came in the sixth inning. Tommy Reyes-Cruz scored on one of five Welland errors to open the scoring for Hamilton (9-8). Josh Williams’ single scored Yolki Pena for the second run, and Carlos Dominguez drove in Niko Kekatos to make it 3-0.
Both Williams and Pena finished with two hits.
Robert Mullen hit his league-leading ninth home run for Welland in the bottom of the sixth. Sam Cawker scored on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game, but that’s as close as the first-place Jackfish (12-5) could get.
Cardinals’ starting pitcher Freisis Adames (1-2) tossed five shutout innings for the win. He scattered two hits, walked two and struck out six. Fernando Rodney worked around a walk and a hit to lock up his fourth save.
Jose Dominguez (3-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits over six innings to take the loss. He walked one and fanned four.
