Baycats beat Panthers

BARRIE – Barrie did all of its damage in the first inning of a 4-1 win over Kitchener on Saturday at Athletic Kulture Stadium. 

Tristan Clarke and Clayton Keyes each had RBI singles in the inning, and the Baycats took advantage of two Panthers’ errors to make it 4-0. Noel McGarry Doyle doubled as the Baycats made the most of their five hits.  

Juan Benitez (5-2) fanned four over six shutout innings to earn the win. He scattered seven hits and walked two. Carlos Sano struck out two of three batters he faced to lock up his seventh save.  

Second-place Barrie improved to 23-17. 

Yunior Ibarra and Yosvani Penalver had two hits apiece for Kitchener (16-23), which is in eighth placeIbarra’s bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning accounted for the Panthers’ lone run.  

Evan Elliott took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits in four innings. He walked two and struck out three.
