Thursday Highlights: Jackfish scores seven straight to beat Cards

WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish scored seven straight runs en route to a 7-1 win over visiting Hamilton on Thursday night.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Jackfish scored twice to take the lead and then added three more runs in the fifth. Welland sealed its IBL-leading 25th win with a pair of runs in the eighth.

Carlos Martinez and Steven Moretto each had two hits and an RBI for the Jackfish. Hogan Brown went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Sam Cawker drove in a pair and McCoy Pearce had two hits and a run. 

Welland starter James Bradwell (3-0) struck out nine over seven innings to earn the win. He allowed a run on five hits with two walks. 

Quin Cotton went 2-for-4 and drove in Hamilton’s lone run. Tyler Duncan also picked up a pair of hits. 

Nik Cardinal (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings. He walked one and fanned five. 

Hamilton dropped to 15-18. 

Royals go deep to beat Panthers

KITCHENER – Five Guelph Royals went deep in Thursday’s 12-4 win over Kitchener at Jack Couch Park. 

Ethan Hammond went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, Josh Garton had two hits, including a home run, two RBI and scored three times, Chris Robinson and Kyle Kush both went 2-for-5 with a solo home run, and J.D. Williams added a solo blast. Malik Collymore picked up three hits, Darius Barlas drove in a run and Claudio Custodio added three RBI. Custodio (1-0) was just as dominant on the mound, striking out 15 over eight innings in his second start of the season. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with a walk. Guelph improved to 15-19. 

Yadian Martinez (2-1) took the loss for Kitchener (21-14). He went five innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits with three walks and a strikeout. 

Offensively, Raul Gonzalez drove in two on a pair of hits. Yunior Ibarra and Stephen Whalen added an RBI apiece. 

Rain suspends Baycats-Red Sox

BARRIE – Rain suspended Thursday’s game in Barrie between the Baycats and Brantford Red Sox in the first inning. The game will be resumed at a later date.
